  • "The past is another country; they do things differently there."
    (L.P. Hartley)

Professor The (Theodor) Svedberg of Uppsala University won the 1926 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

In 1943, he initiated the establishing of the LKB company, with the objective to transform knowledge and ideas - from universities and research institutes - into practical, high quality scientific instruments.

The idea was supported by three major groups of Swedish industries: Liljeholmen, Kema and Bryggerierna. Hence the name LKB AB. LKB was founded in 1943 with activities in Alvik, but moved to Mariehäll in Bromma in the 1950's.

In the beginning the focus was on technical consultancy services, but was soon directed towards products based on research at Swedish universities.

LKB AB grew to play a major role in the development of instruments and techniques for electrophoresis. Thanks to its cooperation with one of Svedberg's disciples, professor Arne Tiselius who received a Nobel Prize for his work on electrophoresis.

From the start, LKB had close contacts and friendly cooperation with scientists at universities world wide - and some of the instruments were developed on the basis of cooperation. However, most of the instrument ideas were born among the scientists employed at LKB.

In 1966, the company's own research efforts led to the introduction of products which made possible the techniques of electrofocusing.

We all know the success and reputation LKB enjoyed world wide as it became one of the leaders in the service of science. After the merger with Pharmacia Fine Chemicals, LKB disappeared as a company and as a brand name, but its products and the people behind the success are still around.

With joy and pride we remember "the spirit of LKB" - the driving force behind our success.
